LOCAL RUNNERS ADVANCE TO NATIONAL MEET (Star Gazette – July 17, 2013)
JAMESTOWN — Six area youths have qualified for the USA Track & Field National Junior Olympic Championships, to be held July 22-28 at Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, N.C.
Qualifiers include brothers Bryce and Gavin Derick of Big Flats, Brody Hayes Glick of Corning, Laurel Vargas of Elmira, Cleo Baker of Painted Post and Elyssa DeRosa of Painted Post.
All are members of Team PREFO, a local youth track and field team for athletes ages 4-15. The athletes earned the right to compete in the national event based on their results from the four-day USATF regional meet held earlier this month at Strider Field in Jamestown.
They had to finish among the top five in their event in the regional event to qualify for nationals.
Bryce Derick, 12, won the 3,000-meter race and was third in the 1,500. He won the national indoor title in the 1,500 earlier this year.
Gavin, 15, finished third in the 3,000 meters at regionals. This is the first time he qualified for the nationals.
Glick, 12, who attends Corning Free Academy, finished fourth in the 3,000.
Vargas, 11, was fourth in the girls 800; Baker, 11, finished fourth in the girls 3,000; and DeRosa took second in the long jump.
Team PREFO, named after popular 1970s American Olympic long-distance runner Steve Prefontaine, is coached by Susan and Jim Derick.
